Summary


The first of his 17 arrests came when he led a group of Blacks through the "Whites Only" door of a local library. His activities attracted the attention of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and [Wyatt T. Walker] would later serve as Ring's chief of staff and as executive director of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Walker was also a founder of the Congress of Racial Equality. For 37 years, Walker served as senior pastor of Harlem's famed Canaan Baptist Church. He resigned the post in 2004. In 2008, Walker was inducted into the Civil Rights Walk of Fame in Atlanta, Ga.

The two men became friends and joined forces as leaders in the African National Congress, fight- ing to overthrow South Africa's apartheid system of racial dis- crimination.
