Wanted: The 16th Battalion of Camp Wheeler, Georgia

Summary

The 80-year-old [Frank Costanzo] uncovered the picture weeks ago when his own photo, nailed to a wooden plaque, started falling apart. At first Costanzo thought the downturned 8" x 34" photo was a cardboard backing, but upon turning it over, to his surprise, saw the faces of the 16th battalion staring at him.

How the photo came into Costanzo's possession is a mystery in itself. Costanzo, who gave the photo to the AmNews in hopes we could help identify its owner, believes that the photo was accidentally used as a backing when his photo was mounted at Manhattan's B & H Frames more than 25 years ago.

[Christopher Paul Moore] believes some soldiers from Camp Wheeler's 16th battalion served as part of the army's 93rd regiment, stationed in the South Pacific. In this tropical locale, American troops waged war against Japanese forces on the isles of Guam, Okinawa and Iwo Jima.
