Later representatives from the six nations involved closely in the international discussion over Iran's nuclear program issued a joint statement: "We call upon Iran, however, to produce tangible results rapidly and effectively by clarifying all outstanding issues and concerns on Iran's nuclear program, including topics which could have a military nuclear dimension"

The French foreign minister told the BBC there was a "split" at the meeting with some nations wanting negotiations and others wanting immediate sanctions, and the final statement was "a compromise." The U.S. Undersecretary of State, Nicholas Burns, told the BBC the joint statement "sent a strict message to Iran."

In the October issue of The New Yorker, [Seymour Hersh] reports that the White House campaign to convince Americans that Iran poses an "imminent nuclear threat has failed", so, the administration's argument has taken a new direction. "President [Bush] and members of his administration have redefined the war in Iraq as a strategic battle between the United States and Iran," writes Hersh, adding that the President now has a revised bombing plan against Iran with a "tightened focus on counter-terrorism."
