Beach Volleyball Debuts at Brooklyn's Coney Island

[Dain Blanton]'s success notwithstanding, bringing the sport to kids hasn't been easy. "It's a tough sell," said Blanton, who became the first African American to win a major beach volleyball event. "A lot of kids don't have access to a beach." That hasn't stopped Blanton from trying to get kids involved. "Dain's Day at the Beach" is a program Blanton established to teach kids the sport. "Basically, I bring kids from the YMCA and the Boys & Girls Club to a volleyball clinic," he said.

Having an annual AVP event in Brooklyn could be the answer to broadening the sport's horizons, according to Blanton. "It definitely should be an annual event," said Blanton, whose parents are native New Yorkers. "It's going to be cool."
