Usher Stars in 'Chicago'

Summary

[Usher] said he is being coached by Ben Vereen, who is not only a Tony Award-winning veteran of the stage, but is also his godfather. Speaking of Vereen, Usher shared, "He's one of the people that I looked up to in this arena. He's done exceedingly well as a Broadway actor, so who better to have help me find my way? I don't look for him to tell me how to act the role, and he doesn't want to do that either, though he's done the role himself. Having a coach that has the type of experience he has, as well as his physically having acted in Bob Fosse's choreographed numbers in 'Chicago,' as well as 'Pippin,' and 'Jesus Christ Superstar,' is wonderful. He has a fair understanding in terms of the style and pizzazz that Bob Fosse looked for in his characters. So, we're keeping the integrity of what Bob wanted, as well as the audience that's coming to watch. More than anything, I want to make sure that Broadway respects it. If people come out and pay their money to see a show, I promise to give them a show. But I hope to get somewhat of a check of approval from other Broadway actors, as well as the committee of people who rate actors in this arena."
