Preventive services are available to families in the Hunts Point section of the Bronx through Unitas Therapeutic Community. The not-for-profit organization, located at 940 Garrison Avenue, between Manida and Baretto avenues, has been serving the community for 35 years, as it works with families and children at risk for drug abuse. [Unitas] works on family cases referred by other social service agencies, the courts and by word of mouth.

Because Unitas is not a treatment center, it cannot offer those types of services, but does monitor the progress of those who are in treatment and provides them with the mental health therapy they need to overcome their drug addiction. Unitas provides services to teens and their families who have been mandated by court and are part of the juvenile justice system because they have committed a crime. The preventive services offered include a psycho-educational program based on the Strengthen Families curriculum that is designed to teach children and their families appropriate behaviors that would deter them from a life of crime.
