Summary
DYCD and ACS have tried to assure parents that there are plenty of DYCD year-round OST slots for all the ACS children available. But the union says that isn't so. According to DC 1707 Executive Director Raglan George, "A careful examination of the list of schools served by the DYCD year-round centers shows that for most of the ACS children, these DYCD centers will not be an option."
Union officials insist this isn't just a matter of saving the jobs of the 600 members who staff the endangered centers or of just finding space for the kids slated to be displaced when the ACS centers close, though both are a big part of the problem. This is also, they say, a question of kids getting the quality of the care, education, and supervision they've gotten in the past. ACS centers staffed by trained educators and staff engage in a wide range of activities, including math and science projects, creative arts, sports, and enrichment activities that promote basic skills and higher-level thinking. DYCD centers are staffed by high school students.See the full content of this document
