Declaring that the events of the past year have made it obvious that it takes a united Union to stand up to the "tough and nasty MTA," [Roger Toussaint] said, "When we are one union, we can make history." Calling the December strike "one of the proudest hours in TWU history," he added that the heart of the strike was about respect. "The One Union' team knows that we won respect around the city and around the world." Slamming the MTA and Gov. George Pataki for the former's alleged "mismanagement" and the latter's "political ambitions" that he believes led to the strike, Toussaint insisted, "The MTA and Pataki owe eight million New Yorkers an apology."
Lashing out at the opposition slates, Toussaint said union members are "fed up with officers going their own way." Instead, he said, they want "One union that fights for the needs of transit workers on the job, not the comfort of officers and staff." "One Union" is more than a slate name, he said.
