Summary
Back in the day, circa 1980, [Matt "The Shoe" Chenevert] was gobbling up track with a 331cubic-inch V8 in a 1974 Chevy Vega. He used its 610 horses to run 9.8 seconds in the quarter in West Coast Pro/Gas dragging, and to earn his nickname. "One day, out at Orange County Raceway, I beat a '57 Chevy so bad my brother shouted 'Man, you were shoeing that sonofagun!"'
"It just got too expensive, and I had two kids," explains Chenevert. "When you are real young you can give that a try. We traveled all over the place, and every dollar came out of my pocket. That's why I'd like to get a sponsor to get me going again."A family man first, Chenevert himself has always given back. For example, he and other racers formed a group that visits schools, hoping to interest youngsters in their beloved sport. "They don't have to join gangs or do drugs," he says. "This is a good hobby for them." The owner of a machine shop with his son in Beaumont, Calif., Chenevert has always employed as many youngsters as he can.See the full content of this document
