Talking Schop: Gotta Go to Joe's

Summary

I can't believe I haven't told you about Trader Joe's since its opening this year. Well, I didn't know about it until I was riding by it in a cab. I called all of my Joe's friends to tell them ('cause I have to be the first to tell) and they all said they already knew (waa, waa, waa). Deflated, I was only reener-gized knowing I did-n't have to wait for my neighbor, Karen, to make her quarterly pilgrimage to Scarsdale to get her delicious pineapple juice anymore. Now I could hop on the train to 14th Street (between Lexington and Park Avenue South) and buy whatever I could carry.

I digress. Trader Joe's is here now and I can't be more happy. I found my LA favorites: green chili and cheese tamales, shrimp gyoza (dumplings) and chicken tacquitos. Of course there were some new items too like Pappadum Chips and Gone Bananas, chocolate dipped frozen bananas. Help me! My next Joe's visit will include bulgogi, a Korean marinated beef that you slice thin, grill and serve with lettuce cups.

In retrospect it's good this review came after Trader Joe's opening because the lines were down the block to get in (I was there). While it was worth the wait, keep in mind Joe's doesn't have everything you need. Use it to supplement your weekly menu or just to try some new items. It's affordable, unique and (9 times out of 10) delicious.
