Government Takes Sides of Drug Dealers in Row Over Police Chief

Summary

Since the military and police began raiding businesses and homes owned or controlled by traffickers in February, the dealers have launched a major offensive against [Felix] and Army Chief of Staff Brigadier Edward Collins by distributing audio recordings to the media and government officials. Most of these recordings involve Felix discussing issues from President Bharrat Jagdeo's temper to floods to gang wars.

"It would be premature and wrong for government to commence any investigations or for the commissioner to make any response until such time as the recordings are authenticated," the association said, adding that "the failure of the government to confirm to these principles may be widely perceived to be an action which favors those involved in murder, drugs, gun running, violent crime, and other criminal and illegal activities."

In one excerpt, Felix is warned that Jagdeo was in a bad mood over the response of the disciplined services to recent flooding, but Felix replies that he is ready to give as much as he gets from the head of state because he is "in a temper, too."
