Swine Flu Claims Ny Student

Summary

"School closure is not done with the expectation that it will interrupt the spread of flu in the city as a whole," the Health Department said. "The Health Department and the Department of Education work together to monitor daily flu-like illness in New York City schools."

Last Friday, the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene announced that transmissions of swine flu are declining and 80 percent of New Yorkers hospitalized for swine flu have underlying health issues.

During the first three weeks of May, 7 percent of New Yorkers had flu-like symptoms but not all had swine flu. Illness and emergency room visits are declining and 530 New Yorkers have been hospitalized with swine flu since late April.

The Health Department added that school nurses notify the principal and contact the City's Office of School Health if there are five or more children who come to the medical room and have a fever that meets the standard definition of being over 100.4 degrees, accompanied by either a cough or sore throat.
