Sopranos Perform Together in Long-Awaited Ny Concert

Summary


Last Friday evening, the event took place at Christ and St. Stephen's Church on West 69 Street. The first half of the program included a duet from Mendelssohn's "Lobgesang"; lieder by Joseph Marx, Richard Strauss and Brahms; chansons by Faure; and an aria from Puccini's opera "Turandot." There were also songs by Florence Price, Margaret Bonds, Camille Nickerson, Copeland and Gershwin; a group of spirituals; and a Rossini duet.

They were able to meet the stylistic demands of material from the German, French, Italian and American repertoire. [Jean Pearman] captured the dark mood of the Brahms-Hölty "Die Mainacht." [Waller-Bright] was especially effective in the seldom-heard Strauss-Busse "Blauer Nacht." They gave a delightful account of Rossini's "Duetto Buffo di due Gatti. Throughout the program, [Kelley Wyatt] played superbly.
