[Malcolm A. Smith], known as a conservative Democrat, dodged questions about his stance on gay marriage. When asked if he supported a bill that would legalize same-sex unions, Smith said while [David A. Paterson] supported the bill, he would confer with fellow Democrats before supporting it.

"[Smith] will become the first leader that doesn't represent an area of Manhattan," said Paterson, joined by influential Democrats including, Harlem Congressman Charles B. Rangel, City Comptroller William Thompson and former State Comptroller H. Carl McCall.
