Festival Showcases Black Classical Musicians in Free Performances

Summary

The opening program will take place at Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church, 250 Dr. Samuel McCree Way, at 5:30 p.m. It will feature Beethoven's Symphony No. 5, African storytelling and Schubert's "Unfinished" Symphony No. 8. This will be an opening rehearsal of the Gateways Orchestra.

The program opened with Mozart's Flute Quartet in D Major (K.285), followed by [Handel]'s Concerto in B-Flat for Harp and Orchestra. It closed with Mozart's Quartet for Piano, Violin, Viola and Cello (K. 478). This listener was again impressed by the high level of playing by the musicians.

The Gateways Music Festi- val was founded by the inter- nationally famous concert pianist Armenta Adams, who has devoted the last few years to creating opportuni- ties for classically trained African-Americans to have a forum for their talents.
