Racism Shadows Obama

Summary


During his speech that day in Philadelphia, [Barack Obama] was responding to comments by his former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, noting that Wright was not so wrong in speaking about racism, but that "he spoke as if our society was static," Obama said, "as if no progress had been made..."

Obama has heard the dissatisfaction with his plan to reform health care, and undoubtedly he has seen the placards with his visage adorned with a mustache akin to Adolf Hitler. And there are the signs declaring "Euthanize Obama" and "Grandma Dies, Obama Lies," as they wrongly misinterpret his public option, with a few of them deliberately affixing "death panels" to his provisions.

One reaction from team Obama did occur recently when Gov. David Paterson told an interviewer, discussing his own problems with racist attacks, that the president would be the next "victim" of a racially biased news media. (A portion of this media assailed Obama after he intruded in the Henry Louis "Skip" Gates v. Officer James Crowley episode.)

Given the simmering discord, the recent outrage of citizens attending town hall meetings, and the even more disturbing presence of opposing voices wielding weapons, Obama may again have to tamper down a more virulent and dangerous form of racism.
