Clinical Trial Participation Imperative to Closing Disparity in Health Care

Summary

"Community oncology clinics care for over 84 percent of the nation's cancer patients," said Lee Schwartzberg, in a release announcing the initiative. Schwartzberg is a physician and president of ACORN. "{Our organization) was designed by community oncology for community oncology-making trials more accessible to all," he said.

In order to increase minority participation in the clinical trials nationally, ACORN thoroughly informs patients about the various research possibilities in the pipeline that will address their illness. Patients are advised of the risks and more importantly, the advantages of participating in a clinical study. "We are winning the war of cancer and all patients {must} have access to the best clinical trials {available}." Schwartzberg said.

Clinical trials are studies that test new treatment options and drugs for patients with specific illnesses, such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, HIV or mental illnesses such as depression, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
