"He was a wonderful brother, a good father and a successful businessman," said Ruth ben-[Ben-Jochannan], the victim's sister. "Not only was he a fabulous artist, he was also a community person, one who was very interested in the welfare of his people."

"I am very pleased to see such a large turnout from the African community," said Dr. Leonard Jeffries, just one of many notables at the wake and funeral. "This is quite a blow for the family since Dr. Ben and his wife recently loss a son-in-law. [Nnandi] was his youngest son, so that is particularly troubling for the family."

"Nnandi was not just my uncle, but my brother, mentor and inspiration," said Salahadeen Kareem Betts. "I loved him for everything he has done for me and the family. He is one of the reasons I am where I am today. He showed me how to use a computer to create my art and I will always love him for that."
