New York Commemorates Garvey

Summary

Chants of "Long live the Honorable [Marcus Mosiah Garvey]!" in call-and-response fashion and shouts of "Black Power!" "Harlem for the Africans!" "Hands Off Zimbabwe!" and "Invaders go home!" were heard while red, black and green flags swayed in the air during the parade's trek through the streets.

The Harriet Tubman Learning Center at 250 West 127th Street was the final place where the celebration of Garvey's life would be heard for the day. Brother Shaka Shakur of the New Black Panther Party reflected upon Garvey's legacy: "Remember, Garvey stood for Black unity and love. Black self-determination. This fight is bigger than you and me. It's not about who I like and who like me. It's about being free!"

Those little islands in the sun develop micro nationalism-this is our victory," he said of the recent success Jamaica has had in this year's Olympics. "But it's the African genes. No matter where you're born at. Be proud where you're from, but you have to look at it from a bigger view. Garvey would see these victories as victories for African people and not just an individualistic view of just one island. We have to have a larger view-Pan Africanism or perish, as Dr. Clarke would say."
