Summary


The soprano Carlotta Franzel (1908-'84)- born in [Buxton] as Pauline McMcCaughan - created the role of Cindy Lou in the 1943 Broadway production of "Carmen Jones," an adaptation by Oscar Hammerstein and Robert Russell Bennett of Bizet's "Carmen." One critic wrote, "She sings and acts like a great lady of the theater."

During a 1923 European tour, [Shelton Brooks] played a command performance for King George and Queen Mary. He not only performed "Some of These Days," but also "At the Darktown Strutter's Ball." At one time, he toured widely with Florence Mills, who was one of the most famous American musical personalities.

Each time I thumb through its pages, I never cease to be amazed at just how many major musical talents were nurtured by this tiny Ontario village, the last of four Black settlements in Canada.
