Meet Kevin Powell

Summary

To date, [Kevin Powell] said he had raised more than $125,000, with an objective of acquiring at least $300,000, which would still put him shy of the $385,000 [Edolphus Towns] said was already in his war chest. "But it's not just about money," Powell insisted. "Remember, Charles Barron won the council seat with less than $200,000. Mr. Towns narrowly defeated Roger Green and Barron two years ago, getting less than 50 percent of the vote."

Even more egregious, Powell said, Towns and his campaign team have called him a "chronic woman beater," even "suggesting that I have spent time in jail." He admits to a past of violence against women, but adds that he has apologized to all of those whom he abused and "they have accepted my apologies and forgave me." Plus, he said he has never spent one night in jail.

Powell, 42, has written extensively about these incidents and has publicly announced his penance and the therapy he has undergone to guard against any further violence. "My whole life has changed," he said. "I don't smoke, drink or engage in any kind of violent behavior." In his new book, "The Black Male Handbook: A Blueprint for Life," slated for release by Atria Books in the fall, he covers this and several other significant issues of pertinence to young Black men.

Recently, in an open letter to Towns, who has represented the 10th Congressional District for a quarter of a century, Powell declared Towns had voted in favor of the No Child Left Behind Act; CAFTA; the Death Tax Permanency Repeal Act; Energy Policy Act of 2005; and the House Resolution 362, declaring Iran a military threat.
