Summary
Growing up impoverished in Cuba, [Jose Luis Martinez] honed his musical chops as a child singing for money on the buses of Havana. His humble roots did not preclude great success in his later years; Martinez continued on his musical quest, co-founding a variety of ensembles including, in 1969, Los Van Van, one of the most internationally renowned Cuban groups of all time. After breaking away from Van Van and going on to perform in venues all over the world, Martinez settled in Spain, where he helped found Cafe Quijano, the Latin Grammy-nominated group that has gone on to record four critically acclaimed albums.
