Labor Applauds As City Council Bill Mandates Employee Health Benefits

Declaring that the only solution to this dilemma was to "level the playing field and make sure all industry employers are providing coverage," City Council Speaker Gifford Miller said that the bill will protect the city's most vulnerable.

Brian McLaughlin, president of the New York Central Labor Council, called the Health Care Security Act "landmark legislation," saying it "now appropriately requires grocery employers to provide adequate health care for their workers."

City Council Health Committee Chair Christine Quinn said the legislation responds to "a growing crisis" of employers failing to offer health care, forcing employees into the public system. Quinn called the act's move of requiring supermarkets to spend on health care "a probusiness response that protects responsible employers as well as the taxpayers of our city."
