Summary


The controversy stems from intensely sexually explicit cell phone text messages sent by [Kwame Kilpatrick] to [Christine Beatty] in 2002 and 2003. The messages were entered into evidence during a highly publicized whistleblower's trial last year that centered on the mismanagement of city funds and other questionable business dealings by Kilpatrick and members of his administration. Excerpts of the messages were eventually published in the Detroit Free Press-and facilitated a full investigation by prosecutor [Kym Worthy] in January. The whistleblower lawsuit was finally settled at a taxpayer cost of at least $8.4 million, according to published reports. During the trial, Kilpatrick and Beatty denied that they had anything more than just a business relationship.
