After initially defending what he said, calling it a "botched joke," [John Kerry] apologized, but only after fellow Democrats sounded on him. This included Hillary Clinton, who called his remarks "inappropriate." Even more cutting, Don Imus, liberal radio talker and his close friend, had this to say when the pouting senator came on his show: "Stop talking. Go home, get on the bike, go windsurfing, anything. Stop it. You are going to ruin this."
Back to Kerry. This isn't the first time he's come down hard on the military. In 1971, after returning from his controversial three-month tour of duty in Vietnam, Kerry told a Congressional hearing of alleged atrocities by American troops. From someone whose honesty in "earning" three Purple Hearts was devastatingly questioned by the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth in the 2004 campaign, this was the height of hyperbole. The Swifties' attack ads and an instant best-selling book "Unfit for Command" cooked Kerry's goose.In 1972, during his first run for Congress, Kerry came out against an all-volunteer Army. To wit: "I also fear having a professional Army that views the perpetuation of war crimes as simply 'doing its job.'"
