Karamu Pays Tribute to Langston

Summary

Last Saturday evening, June 28, I was in Cleveland to accept a posthumous National Legend Award on behalf of Langston Hughes at the prestigious Karamu 2008 Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. It was at Karamu, the oldest Black theater in the country, that Hughes was encouraged to write his earliest plays.

At the Hall of Fame ceremony, other awardees included former Karamu administrator Ken Snipes; Benno D. Frank and Helmut Wolfes; Jean "Granny" Hawkins; Joyce Whitley; Katrice Monee-Headd; Al Fann; and Stephanie Tubbs-Jones. Each, in some way, has really done Karamu proud.

Because I was a longtime secretary and literary assistant to Hughes, I was chosen to accept his award at the Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
