Summary
"I wanted to do something improvisationally that was coming from a raw blues expression to improvise with focus rather than thinking about chords," explained [Jason Moran]. "It's based on the score I did for the short film 'Five Short Breaths,' on the sound of the 1940's Mississippi prison songs. Humming and stomping for the score reminded my soul of a specific time and sound long gone."
"Same Mother," which consists primarily of original compositions, opens and closes with "Gangsterism on the Rise" and "Gangsterism on the Set." Both are riveted with potent improvisations from band members: guitarist Marvin Sewell, bassist Tarus Mateen and drummer Nasheet Waits. "Gangsterisms," a series of compositions, first appeared on his CD "The Bandwagon" "Gangsterism on Canvas" is inspired by Moran's favorite artist, Jean Michel Basquiat."He's very blunt with his images and lines that he sets against backdrops that are one dimensional, but his bluntness of form and color are extremely exciting," said Moran. "'Gangsterisms' are based on reworking themes and keeping the common threads that I took from Andrew Hill. I can keep doing it over and over, adding different threads each time."See the full content of this document
