Imam Honored for 15 Years of Spiritual Bereavement Counseling

Summary

Imam [Yusuf Hasan] has written and co-written groundbreaking papers that set the patient care model for ethical issues of Muslim patients, especially the terminally ill. The essay, "Faith and Issues at the End of Life," appeared in "A Time for Listening and Caring: Spirituality and the Care of the Chronically 111 and Dying," edited by Dr. Christina M. Puchalski, and "Anniversaries, Holidays, and Other Reminders" was published in "Disaster Spiritual Care: Practical Clergy Responses to Community, Regional and National Tragedy," edited by Rabbi Stephen B. Roberts and Reverend Willard W C. Ashley Jr.

Reverend George Handzo, vice president of Pastoral Care and Leadership at the Healthcare Chaplaincy, said that Hasan has been a catalyst "in helping us to understand the misconceptions about Islam." The Lutheran cleric added, "He leads by example, not by something he preaches."

The Sanford, Alabama, native has presented workshops and given lectures at Albert Einstein College of Medicine to first-year and secondyear medical students about cultural and spiritual concerns of Muslim patients.
