Hundreds of Girls Compete in 36th Annual Colgate Women's Games

Summary

On a bitterly cold New Year's Eve, hundreds of high school-age female athletes - some from as far away as Philadelphia and New Jersey - flocked to Brooklyn's Pratt Institute to compete at the 36th annual Colgate Women's Games, the nation's longest-running free track and field competition for girls and women.

In high school competition, Queens' Francis sisters dominated their events. Claudia Francis took the 800 and 1500 meters in 2:15.1 and 4:46.1, respectively, while older sister Phyllis cleared 5'6" to win the high jump competition. Phyllis' stellar performances at the Colgate Women's Games and other meets have won her several scholarship offers to universities across the country.

"When I hear about stories like Phyllis Francis' scholarship offers or Sylvia's return to the games, I know we're making a difference here. Track and field doesn't only keep these girls physically fit, it changes the course of their lives," said Colgate Women's Games founder and meet director Fred Thompson.
