Summary


Pointing to the recent economic downturn on Wall Street, [Raglan George, Jr.] said, "We're concerned about what impact this meltdown is going to have on state and city budgets and local social services. It would be a disaster if essential program budgets are slashed without consideration for children, the elderly and others in need."

Angry at the way the predominantly women of color who belong to DC 1707 are being treated by the city, George said, "Home care workers who belong to another one of our locals, Local 389, are engaged in a battle that simply should not have to be fought in the 21st century - the right to earn time and a half for working overtime." By classifying the workers not as "employees," but as "caregivers," the national Fair Labor Standards Act has been able to deny them this and other rights and privileges.
