"He was a remarkable musician and human being," [McCoy Tyner] said of [Freddie Hubbard] before offering a solo replete with clusters of brilliant chords through which John Coltrane's "Moments Notice" seeped. [Randy Weston] performed a duet with bassist [Alex Blake] whose furious slapping and strumming of the instrument provided the pianist with just enough space for his unique punctuations, roaring bass figures and crisp runs on the piano's higher notes.
The seven ensembles, except one, featured the musicians noted above, and they selected some of Hubbard's most popular compositions to perform, including "Red Clay," "First Light," "Up Jumped Spring," and "Little Sunflower."
