She explained that she feels "it would be a great study to go into the mind of someone who has to lose her hair and how does she deal with the world and how does the world deal with her now that her façade is gone and she is stripped bare. Who is she really? That kind of discovery is worth going on that journey." [Halle Berry] said she bought the rights to the book six or seven years ago. Berry's take on the story is perhaps a peek into her subconscious. Prior to discussion of "Nappily...," Berry was asked about her thoughts about how her particular type of beauty played into her identity as a person. She was at first somewhat dismissive, saying, "I've never been one to rest on the laurel of beauty. I never thought that my looks would provide a career for me." Inadvertently revealing that she has seen her beauty in part as an obstacle, she said that she consciously knew when she started out that she would "have to do movies where my physical self was erased...and I would have to force people to see past this shell." Asked if she still felt this way today, she replied, "Not in the way I did in the beginning. I think I've done enough work that has been respected that I think people look past it."
