Summary
Royalty was revisited last Saturday in New York. Two Queens of Song, Leontyne Price and Grace Bumbry, starred in the Metropolitan Opera's rebroadcast of its 1967 production of "Aida" in the afternoon. Live at Carnegie Hall in the evening, Marian Anderson's nephew James DePreist conducted the Juilliard Orchestra.
Verdi's "Aida" and Handel's "Messiah" are probably the most favorite classical works among African Americans. Since 1903, our own opera companies have produced "Aida," and "Messiah" is sung at Christmas and Easter at most of our churches. Audiences know parts of these works by memory.See the full content of this document
