Grace Institute Helps Women Acheive

Summary

"W.R. Grace, who founded the school, was an Irish immigrant who came in the 1850s and started in the steamship industry. Men who were working on the boat said that they couldn't find jobs for their wives, daughters and female relatives," said Grace Institute Executive Director Dr. Mary Mulvihill. "When Grace Institute started, only domestic skills were taught. Then five or six years after that, the school started teaching business skills. The students in the school were mostly immigrants."

"One of the things the Grace family believes in is building a community. The purpose is that all of these women have friends in the program and having the activities works beautifully. From the first time they enter the program, they don't know each other and we work very hard in building a community in all different ways. We do walks for breast cancer and the American Heart Association, and artists also come in and speak to the women about art. It's the key to our success," Mulvihill said.

"The goal is for every woman to get a job with benefits and with that, they change the lives of themselves and their children," Mulvihill said. "Many corporations have college scholarships and companies can also give jobs to children of employees. A whole world opens up to you when you get a job with benefits."

Men who were working on the boat said that they couldn't find jobs for their wives, daughters and female relatives, said Grace Institute Executive Director Dr. Mary Mulvihill. Students pay small a fee for registration and materials to take courses in basic computer skills, business writing, keyboarding and office procedures.
