Freedom Tower Work Underway; Port Authority Approves Millions in Construction Projects

To date, African-American businesses that have actively participated in the early redevelopment stages of the Freedom Tower project have been minimal. [Lash Green] said this is due in large part to the newness of the project-the Freedom Tower deal was only acquired by the Port Authority last year and in February received an endorsement from Gov. Eliot Spitzer. Initially, the governor denounced the Freedom Tower-due in part to the sluggishness of the New York real estate market, which has improved in recent months. Also, some developers continue to besmirch the Freedom Tower as a "legacy of poor planning and decision-making by the Pataki administration.''

"We have consulted with the Port Authority and others to promote minority participation in the clean-up and subsequent redevelopment of lower Manhattan," [Timothy Marshall] says. "The Port Authority has one of the leading M/WBE programs in New York."
