Last week, a protest was held by the NYPIRG Straphangers Campaign, a frequent MTA critic. "Don't let Gov. [[George Pataki]] Pataki and Mayor [Michael] Bloomberg jump the turnstile," said Gene Russianoff, the group's senior attorney. "Make them contribute their fair share for safe, decent and affordable transit."

"I am barely making ends meet," said Tiffany Middleton, 26, an administrative assistant at a Midtown office. "I am paying back student loans and I just can't afford to pay much more to get to work."

Victor Juan, a plumber from the Bronx, said he couldn't afford a fare hike. "My wife just had our first child and I am deep in debt and don't know where to turn. With the fare hike, it would make matters worse for me," he added.
