Month-Long Disability Employment Campaign Highlighted

MOPD will be accepting a donation by Honda of two (2) wheelchair-accessible Honda Odysseys, both of which have been retrofitted by the mobility conversion company VMI for official use by MOPD and the Mayor's Office of Veterans Affairs. In addition to the donation of the vehicles, Honda, VMI and AVM will take part in a mentoring initiative aimed at exploring accessible transportation solutions and developing a handicapped parking awareness campaign.

MOPD spokesperson Jennifer Bertrand told the AmNews that as part of DMD the success of three Graduates' in the Work Place was honored by FEDCAP at its First Annual Celebration of Work Event held Wednesday, October 24. The honorees will include: Kenneth Berry, graduate of Fedcap Career Design School's Culinary Arts Program who is now a Cook and Porter for Restaurant Associates. Berry, a Brooklyn native, proudly states that he is the first deaf employee at Circle Line in Manhattan and is delighted to serve as inspiration for other individuals who are deaf and looking for work. After successfully completing Fedcap Career Design School's Culinary Arts Program this year, Berry joined Circle Line in April.

Finally, Guy Schlicter, a member of Chelton Loft and Flyer Distributor for Blimpie, will also be feted. Schlicter, a Staten Island native and member of Fedcap's Chelton Loft, was hired by Blimpie in May of 2005. Chelton Loft is a free voluntary clubhouse program for adults with a history of severe and persistent mental illness. Osvaldo Angarath, Blimpie store manager, will present Schlicter with his award, which honors his hard work and dedication.

The MOPD, under the leadership of Commissioner Matthew Sapolin, has teamed up with the American Association for People With Disabilities (AAPD),to pair approximately 150 disabled student and job seeker mentees with participating public and private organizations acting as guides for a daylong job shadowing experience.
