Health Department Battles Tuberculosis Uptown

Summary

New York City Health Department Assistant Com- missioner Dr. Chrispin Kam- bili sat down with AmNews to discuss a troubling "pocket' of Tuberculosis (TB) in Harlem, Washington Heights and the South Bronx. The infectious dis- ease attacks the lungs and causes a person to exhibit symptoms such as a chronic cough, fever, chills and loss of appetite. According to the World Health Organization report entitled "Global Tuberculosis Control 2009," there are approximately 14 million cases of TB worldwide. Though TB is a treatable and curable disease, Dr. Kambili told AmNews that every 15 seconds, someone in the world dies from it.

Dr. Kambili stressed to AmNews that though TB is an infectious disease, it can't be transmitted through casual interactions. "If you take the A train from West 4th Street to 125th Street and someone on that train has TB, you will not get it. If you pass someone on the street who has TB, you will not get it. There has to be prolonged exposure in a confined space. TB is only a concern for airplane travel if the flight is at least eight hours long."
