Corzine May Appoint African American Female to U.S. Senate

"I have the qualifications," said [Nia Gill]. "If I am chosen by [Jon Corzine], I am more than qualified to rise to the occasion."

The selection of Gill would be seen as a gesture towards the African American community. According to a poll done by The Associated Press, Corzine won nearly all the Black votes cast in the gubernatorial race. In addition, the selection of Gill would be a plus to Corzine's possible plans on a future run for president.

Gill faces serious competition for the Senate appointment. [Robert Menendez], Andrews and [Frank J. Pallone] each campaigned hard for Corzine. They also have more name recognition than Gill, who represents the small Essex and Passaic counties in northern New Jersey.
