Summary


They are really "cool," when this word is defined as "an aes- thetic of attitude, behavior, comportment, appearance and style." They can meet the tech- nical and stylistic demands of any piece of music they choose to play without batting an eyelash. They exude a fierce sense of pride, sometimes called "selbst bewusst sein."

In the first half of the pro- gram, [Kelly Hall-Tompkins] and Wil- son gave a shimmering account of [Claude Debussy]'s Violin Sonata. Kenneth Laws did honor to Two Pieces for Solo Violoncello by [Tania Leon]. [Amy Beach]'s song, "Ah, Love But a Day," was beautifully performed by [Robert Sims], Hummings and [Terrence Wilson]. I missed the opening piece, "Helga," by [Alvin Singleton].

On Friday, October 31, the soprano Leontyne Price headed a group of distinguished honorees at a luncheon at the Supreme Court hosted by the National Endowment for the Arts.
