Clarke Criticizes Bush's Proposed Budget

Summary

[Clarke] said that [George Bush]'s proposed budget holds some "alarming statistics that make it clear that the concerns and needs of the people of Central Brooklyn have fallen on deaf ears in Washington D.C." Key concerns Clarke noted include: "According to the Centers for Disease Control, HIV/AIDS is a leading cause of death among African American adults. While the president has taken the right step in calling for the re-authorization of the Ryan White Act and additional funds to address current waiting lists for AIDS drug assistance, his Fiscal Year 2007 budget proposes cutting Medicaid - the single largest payer for HIV/AIDS care - by almost $14 billion over five years."

"President Bush has no credibility when he talks about this budget, which cuts taxes for the wealthy but runs up the deficit for our children." Clarke concludes that Bush's policies are detrimental to education, care for seniors and energy independence. "Americans deserve better than this immoral budget and its misplaced priorities. The American people demand government that serves their interests, not lobbyists and special interests."
