[Cicely L. Tyson]'s pastor, Rev. Calvin O. Butts of the Abyssinian Baptist Church, said that CTS was a "most beautiful school and deserves the name of Cicely Tyson," saying that she had "quite dignity."
Tyson, very moved with emotion at times while speaking, said, "I stand not on the shoulders, but the backs of my ancestors" to the mixed authence of students, family members, invited guest and celebrities that included Terrence Howard, Angela Bassett, BeBe Winans, Susan L. Taylor and elected officials such as Congresswoman Shelia Jackson and East Orange Mayor Robert L. Bowser.Terranee Howard, giving a moving speech and performance, told the students that everything they needed resided within them. Maya Angelou sent a greeting in a letter that was read by Angela Bassett, in which she said, "When you get, give. When you learn, teach." And Tyson, who has visited with the students many times during the seven-yearlong building of the new school and invited her celebrity friends to come, advised the students, "Don't wait for the opportunity, make the opportunity."
