Coach Mac was one of four men whose collective vision, wisdom and generosity of pooling together $500 got the tournament started in 1946 at Turner's Arena in Washington D.C. The 2006 tournament moved to Charlotte, N.C., under the continuing inspiring leadership of CIAA Commissioner Leon Kerry, who didn't have to pool his money. The city leaders packaged a bid that toppled sister-city Raleigh, where the tournament and its week-long chain of events have held sway from 2000 to 2005. Prior to that, the event was held from 1994 to 1999 at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Winston Salem.
