Chris Rock's Love Letter for Black Women Debuts at Sundance

Summary


Baffled and concerned about his daughter's question and demand, [Chris Rock] said: "I've always heard that, whenever you see a girl with low selfesteem, you know... she doesn't get enough love." However, he hastened to add, "I tell my [two] daughters I love them on an average of about 50 times a day. Literally, 50 times a day," he repeated emphatically. "I'm not exaggerating."

Consequently, as a response to his daughter's query, Rock made "Good Hair," which he explained is "about Black hair... Black people and hair." He has also described the film as "a love letter to all Black women" and "definitely a love letter to my daughter."

Through the film "Good Hair," Rock hopes to pass on this timely message to his impressionable young daughter: "that it is what is inside of her head that matters; not the stuff on top of her head." Returning to the main reason for creating the film, Rock concludes: "It's about really trying to understand my daughters."
