Summary

Well, to his astonishment, Cheryl "took off like a bat out of hell. She was in front all the way until about 100 yards from the tape, when she fell. She didn't get up but began to crawl on her hands and knees because she could see the finish line. She stood and began to stagger, falling again. She kept crawling, but finally another girl caught up with her and finished first. That's when Thompson knew he had a champion in the making, a champion who was a two-time USA Indoor Track & Field Champion in 1972 and 1973. Today, the newest Millrose Games Hall of Famer volunteers with the Colgate Women's Games where she is helping to develop future Cheryl Toussaint-Eason champs.
