Charter School Debate Continues

Summary


Although many agree with investing in the education of the nation's children, multiplying the number of charter schools has been a cause of concern for some in the Harlem community. They have cited problematic issues over space allocation between the charter schools and the "host" schools where charter schools are often housed. People opposed to increasing charter schools have also cited the resources that charters schools often have and the lack of the same resources and technologies in the host or traditional schools, which students in the host school are often aware of.

Iannuzzi acknowledged some disparities between charter schools and traditional schools that are housed in the same building, saying, "The schools in New York City have had to take services away from the regular public schools in order to provide space for charter schools, so children lose their library or their gym or their cafeteria or music room in order to [give] charter schools [more space.] My issue is not with the charter school."

Since charter schools get private dollars as well as public dollars, he says that the public has a right to know where their money was going and calls for more transparency within the charter school movement.\n
