And that it was for four spectacular hours last Sunday afternoon when the spacious, urban greenery of Central Park was trans- formed into a royal court by four of Africa's greatest con- temporary chanteuses. Yes, indeed! Oumou Sangare, Les Nubiane' Celia and Helene Faussart and Asa magnifi- cently colored City Park's Summerstage with daring brilliance in performance. Added to which they worked culture and heritage. Gave grace and truth. Rocked fash- ion, hair and makeup.

From 3 to 7 p.m. under an absolutely flawless sky, as verdant, feathery leaves flut- tered and bowed and paid homage, Walt Disney's fanta- sy surrendered to Africa's reality as fabulosity and grandiosity took over, and three beautiful queens and a princess - all with liberated hair - held court.
