Caribbean Hoping for a Hike in Arrivals This Year

Summary

As the weekend ended, CTO spokesman Winfield Griffith said that U.K. visitors have fallen from key destinations like Antigua, Barbados, St. Lucia and Montserrat, where some visitors travel to gawk at the Soufrière Hills volcano that so devastated the British dependency in 1995, forcing a relocation of the capital to the north of the island that is just south of Antigua.

"The outlook is promising despite threats of some negative fallout from increases in the passenger tax which will impact disproportionately on some sections of the region," Griffith said, noting, "Those UK visitors not interested in travel at these increased fares quickly moved from 5 percent to 20 percent, as the fare moved from £500 to £800, marking an average decline in visitation of 14.8 percent over the range."
