Summary

Another young double threat are the Stein brothers-Archer on alto sax and brother Alex on tenor. Bassist Steve Green, trumpeter Leaster Carnegie, Lenny Roberts, Anthony Ware and [Tyrone Shafer] all joined forces for a hardcore extended version of Monk's "Well You Needn't" and Miles' tune "All Blues." These performances just demonstrated that big names aren't always needed to make a fiery statement.

Willie Martinez and La Familia Sextet came to party, and burning Latin rhythms were flying all over the place. A native New Yorker familiar with the Bronx Latin scene where [Eddie Morgan] and Charlie Palmieri, Tito Puente and Tito Rodriguez ruled, he kept the audience dancing. He mixes AfroCaribbean rhythms with a fresh, improvisational mix of jazz in a hip harmonic structure. He has recorded with Ray Vega, Chico O'Farrill and pianist George Cables. Billy Paul, known for his jazz style in an R&B sauce, paid tribute to [Jimmy Scott], incorporating his Epic Record hit tunes (1980s) such as "This Is Your Life" and "Me and Mrs. Jones." Paul noted, "It's an honor to be asked to perform by my friend Jimmy."

Carney's Bar was filled with laughter and loud chatter until vocalist Sharon Clark sang her first note. She has the timbre of Dakota Staton and swings like Sarah Vaughn with great phrasing and enunciation. She was the best surprise of the festival. Her repertoire ran from straight-up blues with "Everyday I Have the Blues" and "You're My Center Piece" to ballads like "Moonlight in Vermont" and the uptempo "Cheek to Cheek."
