Addressing the exuberant crowd in the capacity-filled Klitgord Auditorium at New York City College of Technology, [William C. Thompson] commented, "This is one of my favorite events." Comptroller Thompson then went on to present the Creative Artist Image Award to Slinger Franciscus, aka The Mighty Sparrow, who he described as "a legend" with "an outstanding musical career." He cited Sparrow's record-breaking first hit, the calypso classic "[Jean Alexander] and Dinah," and his personal favorite, "Wanted Dead or Alive," and marveled at the astounding 70 albums recorded by Dr. Birdie. Thompson ended by commending Sparrow for "his contribution to the arts" and calling the esteemed calypsonian "a living international treasure."
